This is not just a "shooting" but an act of TERROR

This is not just a "shooting" but an act of TERROR. My heart goes out to the victims and their families. The problem isn't accepting immigrants/refugees, the problem is the HATE rhetoric that's been spreading in society due to polarized information by the media and politicians that has generated fear in people who don't even know Muslims. The human race is ONE race-stop trying to divide us and demonize members of our global society.
Who bombed Afghanistan Iraq. Syria. Labia a
...nd other Muslim countries. What is going on in Palestine and Egypt. Who is behind the scenes. Canada a peace full country (bordering USA) is now targeted as France for creating hatred against Muslims. Canada is the most democratic and balance counter in the world.I hope Canadian Govt and people will understand the evil thinking of those who are threat to peace in the world.

Rent a PEC Card !

Is it right to devalue yourself, your profession and professionalism for a few thousand rupees?
Every firm is required to keep certain number of engineers as per the requirement of PEC. Those firms who do not fulfill the criteria are not supposed to get the PEC registration.
Those Engineers who are giving their cards on a kind of rent or what ever you call it, is not sound, morally. By doing so, you are killing opportunities for your fellow engineers. Don't devalue yourself and your profession.

Ahsan Iqbal (Federal Minister) #AskTheMinister for Educaton

Ahsan Iqbal (Federal Minister)
#AskTheMinister

Dear Sir!

Thank you very much for starting this kind of interaction. I appreciate various steps taken by your government for the improvement and strengthening of the higher education sector. I have full confidence that it will be continued with the same spirit and commitment. I believe that the uplift of the higher education is is a joint responsibility of the public, students, faculty and the government. Therefore, the input of the stakeholders can be beneficial.

In my humble capacity, I noticed a few issues, which if resolved will help a large number of students and faculty. They are being enumerated as following:

1. Researchers do not have the equipment to conduct or continue their research. Especially those researcher who return from abroad, do not have the facilities through which they may conduct similar research. HEC just offers a small amount i.e. 0.5 Million PKR as a Startup research grant. That much money is not enough to initiate research. So healthy grants are needed to promote research in our universities. For the grants its amount and scope etc, we can follow the mechanisms of technologically advanced countries.

2. HEC returned scholars face difficulty in getting regular job (perhaps just a job, irrespective of regular or contract). It is highly desired to devise a proper mechanism for the placement of the returned scholars. It is very disappointing that they have signed bond/deed of agreement with the Govt. to serve the country for 5 years, however, there is no proper mechanism for their appointment. It is indirectly encouraging the brain drain to other countries .

3. The HEC indigenous PhD scholarship program needs a complete revisit. HEC offers 10,000PKR to Master students and 13,000PKR to PhD students. This is far less than enough. We all belong to families with average or below average incomes. How can one go through a full time commitment for 5 years just on the above mentioned stipend? You already know that families look forward to their kids, that after graduation they will support their family. In a stipend of 10,000 to 13,000PKR one can barely afford a single room accommodation, how could one support his/her family. Please revisit this, a stipend equivalent to that of scholars studying abroad may be offered. As an example, that I just read, European countries offer approximately, 1000-2000 euros per month to Master/PhD Students. Chinese Scholarship council offer monthly stipend of 3000 to 3500 RMB to Master PhD students. We may follow their lead on this!

4. Mostly, public sector Universities have decade’s old equipment for undergraduate students. Even the faculty members who joined at the arrival of those equipment, retired from service. That old equipment are supposed to be in science and technology museums (there are museums, like shanghai science and technology museum etc). Please help the universities to bring new technology. HEC has program in which they provide 3.0 million PKR for small lab equipment, but they have put a restriction that this money should be used for up gradation of those equipment, only, which are 5 years old. HEC may give generous funds, with no restriction, so that the labs could be upgraded to the required state of the art level.

5. Usually the deadlines in any call for proposals/grant applications are sharp. They may be announced several months earlier. All over the world, calls have enough time for thinking, planning and designing of a project according to the call requirement. No faculty members may have proposals ready in advance.

6. Please provide dedicated electricity lines to universities. Imagine a student or faculty is working on certain simulations which require several hours or days (if the normal PC is being used), and there is load shedding, would it be possible ever to complete a single simulation, the answer is definitely no. While performing experiments, one would definitely need continuous supply of electricity. Experimentation never accepts power interruption. The load shedding in public sector universities is severely affecting the performance of students and faculty. If universities are being provided with dedicated power lines and exempted from load shedding, everyone is expected to appreciate this step.

In the end, I assure you of my full support in my humble capacity, for the improvement in the higher education sector. We love our country, we feel proud while serving it.

"WE ARE NOT MARCHING BECAUSE TRUMP WON ❗ "

Leave a Comment
To those who are confused or surprised about why millions of people showed up to protest Saturday. To those who ask "what is the collective goal?" :
"Women are marching because our children deserve a secretary of education that cares about education.
"Women are marching because our family and friends deserve healthcare. Did you know that before the ACA, newborns in the NICU would hit their lifetime caps on health insurance coverage. That's right, Babies who had never felt the sun on their skin could no longer get health insurance.
"Women are marching because domestic violence crisis centers and after school programs deserve funding.
"Women are marching because we deserve clean air, clean water, and national parks.
"Women are marching because we believe the children protected by the DREAM act deserve to be here and they deserve to live with their parents, not in orphanages and foster homes.
"And most of all, women are marching because we have the right to. The right to protest and speak out against our government is the first amendment. That's right, #1! It is one of our most fundamental American rights.
"Saying that we're whining, throwing temper tantrums, or that we're immature, or that we need to get over it will not stop us. It will not stop us from fighting for you. And we are fighting for YOU because you deserve these rights too.
"WE ARE NOT MARCHING BECAUSE TRUMP WON!"
"We're marching because he wants to take all of the things that we hold dear away. All of the things that we've been fighting for for generations.

"And we're not giving up easily.
"Anyone who thinks we're marching because we lost just simply isn't listening. We're fighting because we refuse to lose more."

Higher Education - Provincial or Federal Subject !

Leave a Comment
After 18th amendment in the constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, there has been an unresolved debate between the legislators and stack holders in provinces and the center. Some of the renowned academicians, like Dr. Atta ur Rehman, have constantly argued, on various occasions, that the functions of HEC (Federal) are protected, even after the eighteenth amendment. And that the formation of HEC (Provincial) is unconstitutional. Although the concurrent list from the Fourth schedule of the constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, has been omitted, however, the following powers still remain with the center:
"Fourth Schedule
Federal Legislative List
Part I
16. Federal agencies and institutes for the following purposes, that is to say, for research, for professional or technical training, or for the promotion of special studies.
17. Education as respects Pakistani students in foreign countries and foreign students in Pakistan.
Part II
12. Standards in institutions for higher education and research,
scientific and technical institutions."
This suggests that matters related to Higher education are still federal subjects and the provincial governments should restrain from unnecessary interference.

Pakistan Steel, PIA, OGDCL to be privatised by June 2017

Leave a Comment
ISLAMABAD: The government will complete transactions of three major public sector entities by June this year, Chairman of Privatisation Commission, Muhammad Zubair said on Wednesday.
he described 2017 as a ‘strong year for privatisation’.
In addition to Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM), the government has decided to complete the transactions of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) by June this year, Mr Zubair said.
A company will take over the PSM in June, he said, adding the two considered objectives of the decision are to stop bleeding the revenue and to get the mill running on a sustainable basis.
The Cabinet Committee on Privatisation (CCoP) will meet on coming Monday to approve the transaction structure of PSM and the tripartite concession agreement, following which the formal process will begin, including the appointment of financial advisers, preparation of technical reports and financial bids, he explained.
The mills will remain a shell company and the new company – which will run the mill for 30 years – will build relationship with PSM.
Under the revenue sharing agreement, the new company will pay to PSM.
The Privatisation Commission chairman disclosed that an Iranian state company and Pakistani and Chinese companies have shown interest in investing in the PSM.
A delegation of an Iranian company recently visited Pakistan to explore possibilities for making investment in the mill.
During their week-long stay, the delegation held talks with the government officials and also visited the mill.
Talking about the debt of Rs44 billion against gas charges that the mill has piled up, Mr Zubair said the bill would either be settled by the government or the payment would be deferred.
When asked about the future of PSM employees, Mr Zubair said that it would entirely depend on the new company as to how many employees they would require.
Those whose services would no longer be required will be offered retirement packages, he added.
About PIA, Mr Zubair said a committee has been formed, led by Planning and Development Minister Ahsan Iqbal, to prepare a business plan for splitting the national carrier into two companies. The entire process will be completed by June, he added.
The business plan will deal with improving the financial and operational performance of PIACL on a sustainable basis, in coordination with the PIA management.
The proposal will be finalised next month and submitted to the CCoP.
The first meeting for the purpose will be held on Thursday.
Mr Zubair said the privatisation of OGDCL will be taken up on a fast-track basis and would be completed by June.
The OGDCL transaction was earlier postponed due to political pressure and significant drop in global oil prices. However, the oil market is now in a stable position.
He disclosed that four more public sector entities — First Women Bank, House Building Finance Corporation, Pakistan Re-Insurance Company and National Insurance Company — have been included in the privatisation list.

Each success and failure is itself a learning experience

Leave a Comment
Jamal Rehman, Founder and Producer at True Brew Records

“There comes a time in your life when you have to sink or swim, and the former could never be an option for your passion. After years of struggle, I landed up with my passion as “True Brew Records”, which wasn’t an easy journey for me but the key to my success was being persistent with my passion.
Being an art school graduate I had an unexplored passion for music, after five years studying art first in Lahore and then in London, I took a leap of faith and decided to trust in my abilities as a musician and producer. To pursue music in Pakistan is very difficult and frightening, but ultimately was also the most liberating, decision of my life. This is why I had to take things more seriously, as music in Pakistan is not taken as a viable career. Also, I had no real portfolio to demonstrate my skill set and it took quite some years and much toil to build recognition in the industry.
Initially, I had an idea to set up a production house with an acquaintance that would cover both audio and video. When that effort did not pan out, I decided on setting up an audio facility on my own, one that would function as a creative space from where I could work and launch my projects.
The biggest lesson in last six years of working on my company is one must, against all odds, persevere. Each success and failure is itself a learning experience that helps shape and mature one's efforts. Nothing works exactly as planned but, as long as one genuinely and passionately keeps chipping away at it, things do work out for the best.” – Jamal Rehman, Founder and Producer at True Brew Records

EQ is as important as IQ

Leave a Comment
After successive studies conducted at research centers of international repute, it is now globally recognized that despite outstanding IQ reflected in their academic profile, individuals badly fail in practical life due to poor EQ. Many MNCs are now taking care of this important aspect of their HR and productivity. There are eight competencies that can and should be developed by each individual to enhance his emotional intelligence, and, together with their IQ, do wonders. These are:
(1).Enhance Emotional Literacy (Accurately identify & understand feelings & emotions, both your own and those of others);
(2). Recognize Patterns (Acknowledge frequently recurring reactions/behavior to external stimuli);
(3). Apply Consequential Thinking (Evaluate the costs & benefits of your reactions & available choices);
(4). Navigate Emotions (Instead of suppressing, channelize and transform emotions as source of strength & motivation);
(5).Engage Intrinsic Motivation (Get energy & drive from personal values irrespective of reward & punishment);
(6). Exercise Optimism (Stay positive, never cease to hope & struggle for a positive outcome even against all odds);
(7). Empathize (Put yourselves in others’ shoes, understand their emotional state & respond appropriately);
(8). Pursue Noble Goals (Rise above your petty prejudices, concerns, interests, & work for higher goals, goals that serve the interests of humanity at large).

Be the change you want to see in the world

Leave a Comment

2017 has just started, and yet we are realising that changing the year changes nothing. Right? Innocent lives continue being taken away and the situation is the same as before! This is just the continuation of last year, nothing has changed. This is a wake up call, we can't give up on us, on our freedom and well being.
Our world is telling us that they need us, our world is in pain and it's telling to us that it needs our help. The world is in sickness. It's like our body. When we get sick, it's a sign from our body that we need to take better care of ourselves: eat better food, sleep more, exercise, etc... And it's the same with our world: it's sick, so we need to treat it better before it gets worse. It's a chance to change it.
Welcome 2017 or whatever year it is, it doesn't matter anymore, because change needs to come constantly :)
