#PeshawarAttack : It Raises Serious Questions on a Decade Long War on Terror

Today is a very sad day for us, one 16 Dec remind us of 1971 debacle and so is today. Many students are martyred and still we are not coming out of the American war. I think the region shall be united against the presence of the outsiders in this region. The main text is presence of the hyper imperialist power in this region and the reaction is a footnote. If all the states in the region doesn't unite to expel this outsider from the region there will be myriad consequences for whole of the region.
Indulgence in reaction and then losing balance is no answer to the problem we are facing, the mess called terrorism. Thoughtless confrontation is not a relevant answer from intelligentsia rather we shall think over our strategy to curb this menace of terrorism. Our intelligentsia shall rethink over the framework in which we actually see this phenomenon and should rescue our minds from the deep sea of misrepresentation of history. We shall think over our strategy to curb terrorism, if war against terrorism is further enhancing terrorism than we shall rethink our strategy to curb this menace.
It raises serious questions on a decade long war on terror.. If this is the result after 10 years, it's time to seriously reconsider it.

Why you should hate Pakistani Media ?

There is no doubt that the media influences us.
To state some examples to prove this claim, try answering the questions that follow.
Do you feel like attempting a stunt from a movie?
Do you base your fashion on what you see the celebrities are wearing?
Do you copy the hairstyle of your favorite famous personalities?
Do you absorb the political thoughts of a leaders who appear frequently on Media?
Have you ever attempted to walk model-like in an attempt to imitate those ramp models in fashion shows?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then it is accepting the influence on media in your life. However, it is important to dwell on the negative influences of media because these can change the dynamics of the society for the worse.
Media often hypes the basic facts or information and presents them so as to increase the superficial appeal of things. Media overemphasis’s on the money and ‘glamour’ aspects, film stars, models and the ‘successful’ men and women in the fields of sports, business, art and politics.

The values it emphasises are materialistic; and the people who embody them are largely superficial and artificial. As a result, the cultural values that the media supports and which are taking root in society in modern times are superficial and oriented towards money and glamour.

Onward from General Perveez Mushhraf era. The media houses has been flourished and have gotten more and more freedom than ever. Now there is no authority in Pakistan to challenge them in true sense ,for the damage they are causing to our society  . Even PEMRA has no such a power in real sense to ensure the audit of big media houses and program they telecast to their audience deliberately. Keeping no care of cultural norm.
At first it was believed that media will give direction to a social change, and will positively guide the society towards the desired goals and most importantly it will protect the ideological border of our country.
It was also assumed that electronic media may be successful in stimulating the change in the tightly held ideas and rigid attitudes to bring desired change. It should also use by the state / society /organizations to promote educational activity. But unfortunately our media is very far to achieve it. Rather they have got a very nice experience in making a powerful propaganda against those big elephant of the society to grab money in return.
Stew Job have said very well that technology is nothing. What’s important is that you have a faith in people, that they are basically good and smart,   and if you give those tools, they’ll give them wonderful things with them.
It can be said very sadly that in our media no one has a faith to use them for the betterment rather their faith is only the money. Give them money and they will write and broadcast for you whatever you want ,to misguide the poor masses. The electronic Media is primarily and popularly is in use of some influential capitalist, political leaders, and other powerful institution of the country as a tool of self-propaganda, the quality of news is poor, unreliable and un-imaginative presentation of events and stories, ultimately damaging our society.  They promotes fake leaders through which they misguide the society ,and  don’t care  that what is right and what is wrong. The media reporter often behave rudely as bully and people feel fear just because they will publish a malicious content against them.
Pakistan media has Dangerous and serious drawbacks due to which I hate and we have to counter these problem
·        Western and Indian cultural influx has taken place through media and is permeating Pakistani society
·        There are media talks shows on subject including sex etc which otherwise are taboos in our society
·        Our media is not developing our national image. The thread posed to our values are immense and must be encountered.
·        Pakistani media is projecting false values in its programs they are not real and are not based on ground realties.
·     News are published / broadcasted without  authentication or confirmation of the facts.

Some People has the opinion that it give voice to the neglected element of the society but in Pakistan this kind of practice have never been observed ,as these thing is taken as tool to make a propaganda campaign when it is need against some one to be pressurized.
For Pakistani media, issues are  not important but money is more important what ever the source is.
One more  thing to be remembered,   that our  Media is 95% governed by secular minded people .Majority of owners , anchor persons broadcaster and reporters have hate for religion in their heart and they represent  it in a negative way.  They often draw comparison between religious and non-religious society mentioning the law and order situation. People with low understanding of geo-political issues are easily led to believe that religion is the root cause of all problems. Inti-Islam propaganda is at height and this is not a new thing.
Recently ,the mistake of Jumaid Jamshaid have been highlighted so badly and all the channel took part in this propaganda. It also create a hatred for media by misguiding people about the  real situation and creating a misconception of the Blasphemy  act and it punishment in Islam . The secular media is doing all this to make changes in the Blasphemy Law in Pakistan. So that in future they may be able to  broadcast blasphemous programs with out any hesitation. This is what the media want to achieve their desired outcomes.
As a responsible Muslim and citizen of Pakistan, we have to resist these element by gaining knowledge and find new ways to propagate our values should be the first priority.

Lost Leaders Inc.

For four years of my university life, I missed a platform to raise my voice and groom my leadership skills; the platform which happens to be a democratic right of every student and is popularly known as "student union" had been banned from functioning during the Zia-ul-Haq era. Since then the students union offices turned into stores piled up with office records or furniture (mostly used by rival student groups in clashes) at all public sector universities in the country.
Imposing a decision without proper planning and consideration has been the hallmark of all the governments in Pakistan; likewise, banning the student unions was a decision that deprived the youngsters from getting good leaders, as a result of which we see incompetent leadership all around us.
No use staying mum
University being the highest seat of learning is the final institute that prepares an individual for the society. It is this place where a student studies society and gets a chance to push back the frontier of human ignorance. Hence, one of the prime objectives of research is to find a solution to existing social problems but unfortunately our universities have failed to do so. Leaving few private universities aside, the public universities are on a gradual decline, losing their worth with every passing day. In some disciplines they might be at par with global or regional standards, but as far as producing motivated and determined citizens is considered, their performance remains depressing. There are countless issues revolving around public universities ranging from the recent controversy about the status of the HEC to several campus issues, and along all these problems, the absence of a democratic student body on campus is a major dilemma.

Being a beneficiary of a public sector university, I believe the absence of student unions isn’t as big a matter as is the presence of student wings of political parties. The student unions were not banned because they failed to achieve their targets. It was done solely due to the violence which claimed many lives. The situation deteriorated over a number of years as these student political wings got stronger and stronger. Ultimately, they created such a complete mess that they had to be banned. All that remains of the student unions is the memory of hostility they left behind.

With no inclination towards any particular union, it has been my observation for the last four years that the IJT has apparently been most active in campaigns to restore student unions. On this, issue Bilal Zuhaib, who belongs to the All Pakistan Muttahida Students Organisation (APMSO), was asked why the APMSO does not do much to restore the unions. He said that the APMSO is also in favour of restoring unions, but "it is the VC who has to do it - not us." He stresses the fact that the administration has to be impartial before restoring unions.

Apolitical platform

In the debate whether student unions should be restored or not, the neutral students, who, in strength outnumber the combined students affiliated to any political, religious or linguist group suffer the most. Students affiliated with any ‘party’ can get their things done via force, but neutral students who are far more talented usually fail to play their part as there is no platform through which they can register their problems. Ms Azadi Fateh, who has been a student at KU and is now a faculty member at the Federal Urdu University of Science & Technology, believes that the restoration of student unions has become a complex issue. The universities, at times, are unable to provide security to teachers. Especially, it is the examination department that remains under most pressure. Over time, teachers have developed their own tactics to deal with these dangerous student groups. Hina Mujeeb Alam, an active student who struggled for four years to make KU an apolitical zone remarks that these student political wings are the prime reason for all the problems on campus. "They are the self declared guardians of all campus affairs. Without having any official status these groups rule the campus. Students not affiliated with any group cannot even imagine confronting them, and even the teachers follow the dictation given to them by these groups," discloses Hina.

In a meeting hed at the Governor House in October last year, a delegation of the KU students complained about this issue. "I pointed out to the governor that the group belonging to his party is also responsible for trouble on campus, to which the governor humbly agreed, but so far no action has been taken to curb these groups in KU," remarks Hina.
"In our tims, the student unions were the nursing grounds for leaders, but now there is so much politics in everything that restoring the unions can pave way for the political groups to engage in more aggressive politics on campus, and to avert such a situation, it is better that the unions remain banned," comments Professor Dr. Mahmood Ghaznavi, who is a faculty member at KU and was a student leader before the unions were banned in 1984.

To be or not to be

In this scenario it becomes difficult to predict whether history will repeat itself, in case the unions are restored or not. There are hardly any chances that the political parties would realise their responsibility and make their students obey the laws made by the university. Expecting this would be like expecting the political parties of Pakistan to stop exploiting the poor and working together in the larger interest of the nation … in short, not possible, at least for now.

Does this mean that student unions will never be restored and our students will remain deprived of their rights? These political groups who have transcended all limits of indecency will keep impairing our educational institutions. Whether we like it or not, this is what the ground realities reflect.
The conditions… still the same
In his first speech to the nation, the PM announced the decision of restoring student and trade unions, but unfortunately all the public sector universities in the country are not ready for taking this step, as they believe it’s risky and would result in further mismanagement. Not that it is helping the educational institutes, it’s the other way round, yet it seems like the authorities are too scared to bring a change.
Another interesting oint is that unlike other social, political and economic spheres, in which we as a nation follow the West blindfolded, in this important matter we don’t. We have not realised the immense loss it has continuously been causing us. In the United Kingdom, nearly all the student unions of the colleges and universities are members of the National Union of Students, and through NUS students represent their views to a whole range of external organisations, like the media and even the Parliament. Whereas in Pakistan, the students on campus are exploited by the other students and do not realise that they are being used for political objectives. Ironically, there are a number of students who are not ‘allowed’ to get into public universities as their parents fear for their lives. Such remarks indicate that students who actually study there are probably not safe.
The entire charm of studying at a university, particularly at the large public sector universities, has been dimmed. Now going to a university is almost like going to some skill learning centre, and undoubtedly clerks after clerks are being produced. And then, we blame we don’t have educated leaders. Just think about who’s at fault here.
General Zia Ul Haque was responsible for banning the student unions. It is believed that Zia encouraged rivalry between pro-regime groups, allowing each one to carve out its own fiefdom and turn campuses into a no go area for its rivals. In Karachi and Lahore, hostels were allowed to be used as arsenals as well as places where one armed group confined and tortured the activists of the other group. The idea was to keep the students’ groups fighting against one another instead of uniting against the dictator. After Zia, the unions remained banned but killings still remain a regular occurring. In fact, now guns and hockey sticks have been replaced by bombings. Remember the incident where a hand bomb was used in the KU in December 2010? Hitting the students with bottles, sticks or even opening fire on them seems like normal. It makes a concerned student like me wonder whether the unions will ever be restored again. The genuinely concerned students are left with only one option: to get their degrees and fly away and let things be the way they are, which reminds me of a line uttered by Plato:

Those who refuse to participate in politics are destined to be ruled by their inferiors.

When Young Mind become Bruised…..

Enough is enough! Why do these ineligible people encroach upon the rights of deserving ones? When will this irony change?  .
These were Sara’s word who studied in a well-reputed university in Clifton area of metropolis and was to be presented with a gold medal for her good academic record. Then and an unfair things happened with her. One of her classmate, who has some relation with big shot, got the middle instead of her. Poor Sara was really dejected.
Well, only one scenario cannot express all the frustrations our youths endure. And then they end up in depression which sometime gets cured or gives rise to grave outcomes.
We know that the youth of our country is a ray of hope for a nation so they should be given maximum facilities to achieve their goal, but in our part of the world a large fraction of young people is succumbed to nothing but frustration and depression.

What cause depression in our youth?

Young people must have a peace of mind which enables them to struggle in a better way to achieve their niche of life.
According to a psychiatrist, common causes of depression in youth in Pakistan are poverty, lack of protection by family members, double standard of society, loneliness, unemployment, lack of figure to follow as role model, no leadership, an unimportant part of syllabus.
How is depression hazardous?

Mental pain is very hard to bear. Depression makes one to feel down most of the time, disrupting day to day life may produce the felling of worthlessness, frustration, misery, disappointment or guilt. It became nearly impossible to get away from it and concentrate on the work. Hence the affected individual lags behind.
There are also some grave outcomes of depression in young individuals, such drug addiction and attempt t commit suicide.

Drug abuse

Some depressed individuals seeks drugs so as to relieve themselves form all the worries, misery and frustration. It has many disastrous effects ranging from poor mental activity to suicide commitment. It really renders a person unproductive. Besides, those who go for intravenous drugs abuse also have chances for developing many infectious diseases.

Suicidal thought are common

Suicidal thoughts may occur to depressed people. They may be a consequence of drug abuse or primary depression.  Though it must be born in mind that suicide is is never the solution to any problem. No matter how much sever the pain is. It is always listened and people get through it. A good solution to these thoughts is to share one’s problem and thought with people who are trust worthy and experienced. They may parent, siblings, teacher, religious scholars, therapist, family doctor or a healthy activities also helps.

What to do ?

Youth is the life line for a nation,.
Though depression is painful, there are many ways to get out of it (many of them are similar to those for getting rid of suicidal thoughts plus medications). People must understand than stars can’t shine without darkness. It is also needed that the government take serious steps to facilitate our youth access to good education as well as provide good job opportunities to lessen their misery.

Revolution doesn’t come through Just slogans….

Dear Friends,
In a political struggle, one can’t deny the importance of emotion expression and gathering collection for a defined purpose. Without this no one can expect a big political change.  Being an old man, whenever I hear you by chanting slogans, it create a spirit in me but this is not enough for a revolution. Be clear that revolution doesn’t come by just chanting slogans but revolution will come through a vision and by having a strong arguments.  The world should be attracted toward you and should be satisfied about the new system which you are going to bring about. There is nothing else but to re-thing. You are not in the position for, I’m not saying that no change is happening, some small and big changes has been happing but the change we want need the world to know that there is some big vision has reached and it need attention……an alternative has been presented and another point of view is inviting to be reviewed. It should also be proved that the world need this system and that the world can be run through this new system.

We haven’t raised this question …………………………!

I admit your valuable struggle and services in this context but you cannot deny the fact that you haven’t raised this question in front of the world. Despite you have a strong literature on the basis of which you can do much more big work.

Have a vision …find the best way to make it come true

No doubt Pakistan is full of resources and intelligent youth but on the other hand this is the country which has compromised its sovereignty and integrity as in the case of drone attack and some other international issues.

Pakistan has touched the extreme of both aspect due to which sometime it seems that the country will rise up in the category of developed nations while some it seems that it is failing and lagging behind . According to British survey, my beloved country Pakistan has the world’s most intelligent and intellectual youth and with this research-based conclusion, another amazing fact is that Pakistan is the only country where youth constitute more than 65% of the population i-e more than 117 million. It means that most intellectual part of our population is in majority. And this is the aspect on which the word seems much concerned fearing that if the youth of Pakistan become productive, the country’s economy would thrive at top rate.

, if the youth of Pakistan want to go for a prosperous and bright future then first they must be loyal , sincere , and devoted to Pakistan and protect the ideology of country that would ultimate restore our pride and self-respect to enhance our action for ultimate definite success with high vision .
I, as social activist, got too many chances to get detailed interaction with youth in Pakistan. I have already interacted with youth from Kashmir and Karachi. I have noticed one major weakness in our youth. It is “lack of collective and correct vision”. Due to this issue the nation is still directionless as well as visionless. The best thing is that Pakistan is delivering delivering youth Icon to the word like Ali Moeen Nawazish – notable for making a world record by making 21 A’s in A’ level; Arfa Karim – the youngest Microsoft Certified Professional at the age of nine; Aitiza Hassan –a 15-year old boy who died while trying to save his school from a suicide bomber. The youth of Pakistan also trained in disaster management as we have already faced in critical situation like years of terrorism, tragic earthquake and floods.
Many social organization and NGOs have been working for youth in Pakistan. These organizations claim that they want to eliminate weaknesses of Pakistan with the help of youth but it seems that they are mainly interested in minting money or spreading some hidden agendas. You will be shocked to know that Pakistan is on the top in world to have mushroom growth of NGOs. I have worked with several NGOs and youth related platforms but only a few are doing their best. The small number is not encouraging but still I am hopeful that together we will bring some productive and revolutionary change in which several other thing would come up with “Roti Kapra our Makan” and the word “Tabdeeli “ will not be used merely as a slogan , if the youth of Pakistan want to go for a prosperous and bright future then first they must be loyal , sincere , and devoted to Pakistan and protect the ideology of country that would ultimate restore our pride and self-respect to enhance our action for ultimate definite success with high vision .  Think best, act best, and hope for the best of the best.
